Alessandro Trovarelli

Alessandro Trovarelli is full professor of Industrial Chemistry at the University of Udine since 2003, where he has also served as Pro-Rector for Research and Head of the Department of Chemistry, Physics and Environment. He has worked at the University of Oregon, Colorado State University, the University of Szeged and the University of Rome ‘La Sapienza’. He is head of the Industrial Chemistry and Catalysis Laboratory at the Polytechnic Department of the University of Udine. His main scientific interest is the preparation of heterogeneous catalysts, with particular attention to materials containing rare earths, solid solutions, metal-modified oxides, perovskites, vanadates and polyoxometalates. The main applications studied are the elimination of harmful compounds from car exhaust gases (NOx, VOCs and particulates), hydrogen production, CO2 capture and utilisation, and the activation of molecules for energy applications. From 2012 to 2024, he was a member of the editorial board of Applied Catalysis B: Environmental (Elsevier) and is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Rare Earths (Elsevier). For his research, he received the University Research Program Award from the Ford Motor Company (USA, 2015) and the Mario Giacomo Levi Gold Medal from the Industrial Chemistry Division of the Italian Chemical Society (2022) for his studies in cooperation with Treibacher Industrie A.G. on new catalyst formulations for NOx removal. He is a founding member of LOD srl, a spin-off of the University of Udine. He has published more than 200 papers in indexed journals and 7 patents and is included in the list of most cited scientists compiled by Elsevier-Stanford from 2019 to 2023. In 2025, he was appointed ordinary member of the Academy of Engineering and Technology (ITATEC).
