Lorenzo Bruzzone

Lorenzo Bruzzone received the Laurea (M.S.) degree summa cum laude in Electronic Engineering and the Ph.D. degree in Telecommunications from the University of Genoa, Italy, in 1993 and 1998, respectively.

He is currently Full Professor of Telecommunications at the University of Trento, Italy, where he teaches courses in remote sensing, radar, and digital communications. He is the founder and director of the Remote Sensing Laboratory (RSLab).

His current research interests include remote sensing, radar and SAR systems, signal processing, artificial intelligence and machine learning, and pattern recognition. He promotes and supervises research in these areas through numerous national and international projects focused on Earth observation and planetary exploration. He serves as Principal Investigator on several research initiatives. Among these, he is currently the Principal Investigator of the Radar for Icy Moon Exploration (RIME) instrument on the JUICE mission and of the Subsurface Radar Sounder (SRS) on the EnVision mission, both by the European Space Agency (ESA). He is also the Science Lead for the High Resolution Land Cover project within ESA’s Climate Change Initiative.

Prof. Bruzzone is the author or co-author of more than 420 papers in peer-reviewed international journals, over 390 conference papers, and 25 book chapters. He has also edited or co-edited 18 books and conference proceedings, as well as two scientific books. His work is highly cited, with over 59,500 citations and an h-index of 114 (source: Google Scholar). He has been invited to deliver keynote talks at more than 40 international conferences and workshops.

He served as a member of the Administrative Committee of the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS) from 2009 to 2023, holding the position of Vice President for Professional Activities from 2019 onward. Among his early recognitions, he received first place in the Student Prize Paper Competition at the 1998 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS) in Seattle. Since then, he has received numerous international and national awards, including recently:
•    IEEE GRSS Outstanding Service Award (2015)
•    IEEE IGARSS Symposium Prize Paper Awards (2017 and 2018)
•    WHISPER Outstanding Paper Award (2019)
•    IEEE GRSL Letters Prize Paper Award (2022)

He has served as Guest Co-Editor for several Special Issues in international journals. He is co-founder of the IEEE International Workshop on the Analysis of Multi-Temporal Remote-Sensing Images (MultiTemp) and currently serves on its Permanent Steering Committee. Since 2003, he has been Chair of the SPIE Conference on Image and Signal Processing for Remote Sensing.

Prof. Bruzzone is the founder of the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Magazine, where he served as Editor-in-Chief from 2013 to 2017. He was also a Distinguished Speaker of the IEEE GRSS from 2012 to 2016.

He is a Fellow of the IEEE.
