Massimo Derchi, born in Genoa in 1963, is Chief Operations Officer of Snam and head of the Business Unit Asset Italia since January 2018. Snam is the largest operator of natural gas transportation and storage in Europe; the Business Unit includes all Italian Snam’s gas transportation, storage, and regasification activities for a combined turnover of 3 bln€.

He is also CEO of Snam Rete Gas (the Snam company dedicated to gas transportation) since April 2022 and was the Executive Chairman from 2017 to 2022.

He graduated in Electrical Engineering from the University of Genoa in 1986 and has held various positions (from development and investment management to M&A, procurement, and strategic planning) in Italian and foreign groups operating in the energy sector.

Between 1986 and 1996, he was Project Manager and Head of Foreign Projects for engineering companies of the Erg group.

In the following three years, he served as Project Director at Air Liquide Italia, realizing, among other things, two of the largest oxygen production plants in the world.

From 1999 to 2004, he headed the Italian branches of European and American engineering companies (water cooling plants, flue gas treatment, etc.).

Returning to Erg, between 2005 and 2011, he held senior management positions in refining (Director of Procurement, Programming, Planning and Control, and finally Director of Refining). 
From 2011 to 2016, as CEO of Erg Renew, he played a key role in transforming Erg from an oil refiner into one of the top ten onshore wind energy producers in Europe, and the largest in Italy, planning and implementing the company's geographical growth in seven European countries, also through acquisitions (according to Bloomberg, Erg Renew was the "#1 Worldwide Acquirer" in Clean Energy in 2013).

He has been a Senior Advisor to Italian and international energy groups.
