Miriam Serena Vitiello

Miriam Serena Vitiello (PhD 2006) is Director of Research at the National Research Council (IT) and Adjunct Professor of Condensed Matter Physics at Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa (IT).

Prof. Vitiello pioneered research in Terahertz optics and nano-photonics, providing seminal contributions on the development and applications of THz semiconductor heterostructure lasers; nanostructured detectors based on semiconductor nanowires, 2D materials and vdW heterostructures; graphene-based photonics; detectorless near-field THz microscopy and electronic nanodevices operating in the far-infrared.

She is the recipient of several prestigious European grants including 5 ERC grants (ERC Advanced Grant 2024 , ERC Consolidator Grant 2016, three ERC proof of concept grants), five FET Open grants, ITN Marie Curie grant, she was coordinator of the THz electronic and photonic working group in the Graphene Flagship) and international research grants (Balzan International Research Grant), and several awards (the Friedel-Volterra Medal 2020 of the French and Italian physical societies, the Gold Medal of the Pontificia Academy of Science (2018), the Sapio Research and Innovation award (2018), the International research award Guido Dorso (2016), the SPIE early career award (2015), the “Sergio Panizza” award of the Italian Physical Society (2012)).

She is co-author of more than 250-refereed papers on international journals, holds 2 patents and delivered more than 120 invited/plenary talks at international conferences.

She is Fellow of the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE).
