Paola Occhetta

Paola Occhetta is a bioengineer and entrepreneur with a strongly translational profile, focused on bridging academic excellence and industrial innovation. She is an Associate Professor at Politecnico di Milano and CEO and co-founder of BiomimX S.r.l., a company dedicated to the development and commercialization of mechanically active Organs-on-Chip as New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) for biomedical research and drug screening. She earned her PhD in Bioengineering at Politecnico di Milano in 2015, developing microfluidic platforms for 3D cell cultures. During her training, she spent several months in international research laboratories, including IRCCS Galeazzi in Milan, University Hospital Basel, and the University of Queensland. She also completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University Hospital Basel in translational medicine, working on in vitro models of healthy and diseased cartilage. Back at Politecnico di Milano, she was awarded an MSCA Individual Fellowship and a Fondazione Cariplo project, both aimed at developing a joint-on-chip model for osteoarthritis research. More recently, she has been awarded an ERC Starting Grant and an EIC Pathfinder grant within Horizon Europe, continuing her work at the interface of Organs-on-Chip and Artificial Intelligence. She is also an active member of the CEN-CENELEC Focus Group that contributed to the European roadmap for Organs-on-Chip standardization, and she holds a role within ISO in standardization activities in this field. She has authored more than 40 peer-reviewed scientific articles, 5 book chapters, and she is the inventor of 2 patents, one granted and both transferred to industry.
