
Alberto Montanari is full professor of Hydraulic Works, Maritime Engineering and Hydrology at the Department of Civil, Chemical, Environmental and Materials Engineering of the University of Bologna. He also holds an adjunct professorship at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University, where he teaches a course on climate change and global health. He is Editor-in-Chief of AGU Advances, a scientific journal published by the American Geophysical Union. He currently serves as acting president (in a public service capacity) of ARCA Srl, a public–private company managing the integrated water service in the Province of Reggio Emilia.
His research interests focus on the impacts of climate change on water resources management, flood events, ecosystem resilience, and public health. His lectures are designed in the spirit of open-access education. Since 2012, he has made available on his website www.albertomontanari.it
Alberto Montanari has devoted a significant portion of his time to voluntary service in support of international scientific associations. In particular, he was President of the European Geosciences Union from 2019 to 2021, Editor-in-Chief of Water Resources Research—one of the world’s leading scientific journals in the field of water resources management—from 2013 to 2017, and from 2013 to 2017 served as President of the International Commission on Water Resources Systems of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS).
Within academia, from 2015 to 2021 he was Director of the Department of Civil, Chemical, Environmental and Materials Engineering at the University of Bologna.
In 2017, Alberto Montanari received the Union Service Award of the European Geosciences Union (EGU) and was elected Fellow of the American Geophysical Union (AGU). In 2018, he was awarded the Henry Darcy Medal by EGU and the Kaula Award by AGU. In 2019, he received the Dooge Medal from the International Association of Hydrological Sciences.
