Emilia Paone is a Fixed-Term Researcher (RTD-B) at the Università degli Studi Mediterranea di Reggio Calabria in Italy. She earned her Master’s degree in Chemistry in 2015 from the Università degli Studi di Messina and, in the same year, began her Ph.D. in “Civil, Environmental and Safety Engineering” at the Università degli Studi Mediterranea di Reggio Calabria, obtaining the title in April 2019.
Her research focuses on heterogeneous catalysis, with particular emphasis on the sustainable valorization of waste and residues for the green production of high value-added chemicals. She has contributed to the development of innovative catalytic systems and processes aligned with circular economy principles, particularly in the areas of lignocellulosic biorefinery (lignin-first approach), plastic upcycling and the valorization and reuse of electronic waste (e-waste).
She has authored 43 peer-reviewed scientific articles published in international journals and 2 book chapters, documenting her research in the field of green and sustainable chemistry.
Emilia serves on the editorial boards of several international scientific journals, including Molecular Catalysis, Current Opinion in Green and Sustainable Chemistry, Sustainable Chemistry, and Catalysts.
She has been a board member of the Young Group of the Italian Chemical Society (SCI) and a Delegate to the European Young Chemists’ Network (EYCN). She is currently a member of the Board of the Industrial Chemistry Division of SCI and serves as the Italian IUPAC Young Observer (IUPAC YO) for the 2024–2025 biennium.
