Roberto Danovaro

Roberto Danovaro is Professor of Marine Ecology and Marine Ecosystem Restoration at the Polytechnic University of Marche. From 2013 to 2022, he served as President of the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn – the Italian National Institute of Marine Biology, Ecology, and Biotechnology – by appointment of the Minister. He is former President of the Italian Society of Ecology, the Italian Society of Limnology and Oceanography, and the European Federation of Marine Science and Technology Societies. Since 2014, Roberto Danovaro has been President of the Scientific Council of WWF Italy. He is a member of several international panels (IUCN, UNEP) and a Steering Board Member of the OECD (Fostering Innovation in Ocean Economy). He is Editor-in-Chief of international scientific journals (Chemistry and Ecology – Taylor & Francis, and Marine Ecology – Wiley), and coordinator of numerous EU-funded projects (Horizon 2020, DG ENV, EASME, Biodiversa). He is a member of the Academia Europaea and the EU Academy of Sciences. His research focuses on deep-sea and abyssal ecosystems, ecosystem functioning and restoration, and the impacts of climate change. He is the author of around 500 ISI-indexed articles and several books. He has received numerous international awards and honors, including: ENI Award – Environmental Protection Prize (2013) – The highest Italian recognition for research on energy and the environment, awarded by the President of the Republic for his pioneering studies on combating climate change. Médaille d’Or of the Institut Océanographique de Paris (2011) – Awarded by the French Oceanographic Society to the best marine researcher of the year, presented by Prince Albert II of Monaco. World Prize for Biology – BMC (BioMed Central, London 2010) – An international prize reserved for the best biological research worldwide. Gold Trident Award from the International Academy of Underwater Sciences and Techniques (2023) – A lifetime achievement award for his commitment to the protection of the marine environment. The Motumundi Prize for Environmental and Climate Protection (2024) – Awarded for outstanding scientific contributions to ecosystem conservation and climate crisis mitigation. In 2020, he was recognized by ExpertScape as the most influential scientist in the world in the field of “Seas and Oceans” for the decade 2010–2020.
